Community Services AR-2015 - page 17

As our Agency continues to focus on improving the quality of life for
thosewe serve, we continue to encourage everyone to live a healthy
lifestyle. This serieswas created tohelp teachhands-on cooking skills
for preparinghealthymeals, exposure tonew foods andbestways to
include healthy choices every day. If the people we serve are given
the proper support, direction and tools, we can immediately see the
IMPACT it has on their health. Our goal is to encourage them to live
theirmost independent lives possibleand creating ahealthy learning
environment inwhich todo that.
Often the people we serve need the opportunity to relax and
unwind during the winter months. This room offered those
in our Day Habilitation programs a quieter place to play video
games or just enjoy each other’s company. While everyonewe
serve has their own unique needs, many people enjoy using
sensory items to help them regain their focus or just to relax.
Items purchased with this mini-grant also helped some of the
youngpeople inour residenceshave fun in the comfort of their
home.
Taking time to reconnect with nature, even to simply take a walk
outside, isn’talwayseasy for thoseweserve. However theoutdoors
canoftenprovideacalmingatmospherewhichcanbenefit anyone.
Many of our employees noticed the positive IMPACT being outside
hadon thoseweserveandsubmitted requests for items thatwould
help enhance the outdoor living space at several locations. One
location chose to build a small fish pond where residents could
sit outside, relax by the pond and have fishing derbys. Another
created a garden which would help teach planting skills, care for
plants and ultimately provide healthy ingredients to add to their
meals.
